September 11th 2001 will be a day that will not be forgotten, not just for the Americans but for the whole world. the terrorist attacks on September 11th 2001 has changed the world. On this day a group of terrorist boarded four commercial jetliner's, they were all transcontinental flights. Four flights combined were carrying a maximum of 11,400 gallons of jet fuel. The aim of these four attacks were to take control of the four air planes and turn them into weapons. 3 of the 4 planes hijacked succeeded by causing mass destruction. 2 of the planes flew directly into the twin towers of the World Trade Centre located in New York. The third plane crashed into The Pentagon which is a highly secured USA military base located in Washington D.C. The last plane and the fourth plane crashed into a paddock in Pennsylvania.
American Airlines Flight 11 was a domestic passenger plane carrying 90 passengers. That was scheduled to fly from Boston to Los Angeles. At 7:59 am the plane departed from Boston's Logan Airport and was expected to land in Los Angeles. At 8:13, the pilots last radio communication was made from the pilots to ground control: "twenty right American eleven".At 8:15 Boston Air Traffic Control began unsuccessful attempts to contact the pilots after the plane failed to respond to an order to climb. At 8:20 the plane stopped transmitting its transporter signal, and veered northward and departed from the westward heading of the planned route. At 8:24, the following transmission was reportedly received from Flight 11:"We have some planes. Just stay quiet and you'll be okay .. we are returning to the airport. Nobody move. Everything will be okay. If you try to make any moves, you'll endanger yourself and the air plane. Just stay quiet. Nobody move please we are going back to the airport .. don't try to make any stupid moves." Neither pilot or co-pilot pressed the distress button.
According to NORAD's September 18 timeline, the FAA did not notify NORAD of the signs that Flight 11 was hijacked until 8:40, 25 minutes after the first signs of trouble. Supposedly at 8:21am two phone calls were made from the plane from two of the air hostesses, Betty Ong and Madeline Sweeny. Madeline apparently rang American Airlines Ground Manager Michael Woodward at Logan and spoke calmly to him for 25 minutes until the plane crashed. Supposedly the call was not recorded and Woodward took notes. Her first comment is "Listen, and listen to me very carefully. I'm on Flight 11. The air plane has been hijacked." At 8:45, just before the crash, she said "I see the water. I see the buildings. I see buildings," then after a pregnant pause, a quiet "Oh, my God!"
At 8:46 am American Airline flight 11 crashed into the North Tour. Numerous people on the street saw the collision, however there is very few video footage from the event. The impact and fire caused by the collision later caused the North tower to collapse 102 minuted after the crash.
The second plane to be hijacked was passenger plane, United Airlines Flight 175. It was hijacked by five al-Qaeda terrorists on September 11, 2001, as part of the September 11 attacks. On the day of the attacks, the flight carried only 56 passengers and 9 crew members. According to the commission report the plane was delayed and left the airport at 8:14 am which was the same time the hijacking began on flight 11. It is supposed that the hijacking started between 8:42 and 8:46 am. The passengers on the plane were threatened with bombs, knives to make their way to the back of the plane. At 8:47 the plane was seen changing the original route for the plane. Also, at 08:51, Flight 175 changed altitude and headed towards the South tower.Flight 175 crashed into the South Tower of the World Trade Centrer (Tower 2) at 9:03:02, striking between floors 77 and 85.
The third attack was on American Airlines Flight 77. There was a total of 64 people on board including the 5 hijackers and six crew members. The 9/11 Commission estimated that the flight was hijacked between 08:51 and 08:54, shortly after American Airlines Flight 11 struck the World Trade Centre and not too long after United Airlines Flight 175 had been hijacked. The last official radio communications from the aircraft to air traffic control occurred at 08:50:51.
There were no reports of anyone being stabbed or a bomb threat. At 08:54, the plane began to deviate from its normal, assigned flight path and turned south. The hijackers were suspected to have set the flight's autopilot heading for Washington, D.C. By 08:56, the flight was turned around, and the transponder had been disabled. At about 9:38 am, a twin-engine jet liner flew into the pentagon and exploded, according to many eye witnesses.
The last attack was Flight 93, a Boeing 757-200 on a scheduled flight from Newark to San Francisco, with 38 passengers, five flight attendants, and two pilots. At 8:42 AM, Flight 93 took off from Newark International Airport, 41 minutes after its scheduled departure time. Several communications with air traffic controllers indicate that Flight 93 was hijacked at around 9:27 am. At 9:30, the transponder signal was turned off. At roughly this time, the plane appears to have reversed direction and started flying toward the capital. Although the specific target is not known, it is believed that the hijackers were intending to crash the plane into either the White House or the Capitol Building. Passengers were forced to head to the back of the plane and the hijackers had knives and box cutters and used threats saying they has bombs. It is believed that some passengers were able to make phone calls to people on the ground, there are reports from up to 13 phone calls made from the plane before the crash, there is large debate as to if these actually happened. During the phone calls people on the plane were told about the other hijacks. It is suspected after analyse from the flight recorders that were found in the wreckage from the plane that before this plane crashed some of the passengers on the plane tried to over through the 4 hijackers, they tried to take control of the plane which resulted in the plane being diverted from it's original course route, which in result caused the plane to crashed into a field near the Diamond T. Mine in Stonycreek Township. This plane was the only plane to not reach it's intended target.
The September 11 attacks resulted approximately 3000 immediate (attack time) deaths. The attacks had a horrendous impact on america and also the rest of the world. It caused a lot of fear and nervousness around the whole world. Media coverage of this event was huge, it started minutes after the first attack and continued to be a news headline for weeks. The world has never been the same after this devastating event.
Later after the attacks the hijackers were identified and then linked back to the terrorist group al-Qaeda and the groups' leader Osama Bin Laden. It is believed that Bin Laden was the leader of these attacks. This as a consequence led to the conflict in war between America and Afghanistan. On the Second of May US troops kill al-Qaeda leader Osama Bin Laden after years of him running and hiding.
