9/11: Significance to New Zealand and their invlovment
It is safe to say that any New Zealanders who were alive when this attack happened will remember what they were doing when the news came that the two twin towers had been struct. New Zealand didn't have a significant impact during the attacks but it shook the nation. Live footage was shown across every TV station. After the attacks New Zealand as a nation rose up and helped the US. New Zealand was not hugely affected by the attacks, it is something that no New Zealander will ever forget.
As a result of these attacks, two New Zealander's were killed in the attacks, this could be considered as lucky as the numbers could have been a lot higher. John Lowowsky was one of the New Zealander's that was killed, he had been living in New York for 12 years and worked for an insurance company in the North WTC tower. John had family in New York, a son and a wife, as well as majority of his family living back in New Zealand. He told his friends that he wanted to come back to live in New Zealand. His death had a huge impact on this family back home the grieved his loss. The second Kiwi that was killed was Alan Beaven a 48 year old a successful lawyer who left behind a family of 3 children. Alan was on board flight 93 that crashed into a rural field. These death caused devastation the their families and had a huge impact on them then, now, and forever.
The fact that there were New Zealander's killed during these attacks sparked fear amongst New Zealand, many people were put off flying or were apprehensive about getting on the plane after the huge coverage of the attacks.
As well as across the whole world airport security in New Zealand increased hugely. Airports through New Zealand invested in more security equipment. More time was spent checking bags and peoples passports and more on flight security was put in place. All of this was done to prevent terrorism in New Zealand. Airports were further developed which involved in the creation of more jobs and companies, this was a positive for New Zealand citizens because it offered up jobs to the unemployed but had huge strain on the government as they were forced to fund this and they couldn't afford it. Along with the security being increased New Zealand took huge measures to try and make sure this never happened in New Zealand for example the 'anti terror' law being brought into parliament as a push to keep New Zealand safe.
The biggest significance that 9/11 has on New Zealand as a consequence of 9/11 is New Zealand's involvement with the United States in the war in Afghanistan. Very quickly after the news of these attacks a lot of kiwis put themselves forward to join the army. They wanted to stand for their nation and help. With the large number of new Zealander's going to war it increased the changes of us (New Zealand) getting injured and/or killed, this made a lot of people anxious and worried as they didn't want New Zealand to get involved and especially for the families of the soldiers as they saw first hand all of the conflict going on in the world and they knew their family members were being involved. With New Zealand helping the US it strengthen the bond between the two and formed allies which was good for New Zealand as being such a small country it was good to have a lot of allies.
New Zealand being involved in this war with the US caused a lot of controversy as their was the rumours about the US government hiding what had actually caused the attacks from the world, and there was the theory that the US government has been involved, This could cause hugely bad for New Zealand if this was ever proved to be true. This could result in New Zealand being involved in an illegal war. This should be a worry for the NZ government because they could end up being prosecuted for war crimes. As a direct consequence of the war in New Zealand prices for food and oil sky rocketed. These prices have risen to the point where they are hugely impacting New Zealand economically and it is making it very hard for families to maintain a comfortable life style. It is causing the prices of daily needs to be increased to the point were people can't afford them. All of this is directly linked with New Zealand's involvement in the Afghanistan war.
The 9/11 terrorist attacks have impacted New Zealand in numerous ways and still continue to at present time with new Zealand troops still involved in Afghanistan. New Zealand will never forget this attack on the world.
