9/11: Significance to people's lives
No matter who you are or where you were the day of these attacks. The morning on the 11th of September is a day that no one will forget. Not only America but the whole world. As a result of the 9/11 just about 3000 people died in this terrorist attack with a huge number injured. In these attacks 26,06 of the people killed were as a result of the twin towers collapsing, 246 of the deaths were those of people on the planes during the attacks, 125 were of those people at the Pentagon and 19 were the terrorist attackers. 343 fire fighters were killed as a result of the attacks as well as 23 police officers and 2 paramedics. These deaths alone had a horrendous impact on peoples lives.
Trauma reactions were huge amongst people in New York in the times after the attacks. These still continue today. Many people suffered from mental health diseases such as Post Traumatic Stress for years after. In a study done by Dr. John Grohol he found that "Measurements taken 3–5 days after 9/11 suggested that 44% of the adult US population experienced substantial stress. Findings from subsequent national studies also showed that individuals across the country experienced fear and insecurity, and had increased rates of post-traumatic stress (PTSD) symptoms 2 months later." As a result of this many of these PTS and anxiety tendencies got passed down through to the young children. 9/11 had significant impact on children as a lot of them were seeing very disturbing images around them. People reaching out for counselling and support rocketed in the months and years after the attacks.
The 9/11 attacks had an un believable impact on Americas Economy. An estimated 600,000 jobs were lost as a direct consequence of the terrorist attacks. Of those lost jobs, 226,000 were in travel and tourism. At the World Trade Centre, 1,100 businesses were disrupted. In the month following the attacks the economic loss to New York was $105 billion. To remove the debris that was caused directly from the attacks was $1.8 million. The Stock exchange in New York was closed for 6 days which resulted in huge losses. An estimated $40.2 million was paid out to insurance to families as a direct consequence of the attacks. Airports in America were shut down for days after the attacks this caused huge losses in America. The Government then had to pay the wages out to the people who could no longer work. The terrorist attacks had a devastating impact on the government and the Economy of New York and the whole country.
As well as there being huge economic losses there was enormous structural damage which cost the Government huge amounts of money. As a direct cause the 4 hijacked air crafts cost $385 million, the replacement costs of the World Trade Centre was $3.5-4 billion, damage to the pentagon was estimated at $1 billion, clean up costs were $1.3 billion. During 260 days and 1.5 million working hours was spent cleaning up from these attacks. As well as The North and South Towers and towers 7 collapsing the New York Marriott World Trade Centre hotel which was located in the third WTC building was levelled. In WTC building 4 which business offices were located in were severely damaged as a cause of the south tower collapsing. At the 5th WTC building which housed Port Authority Police offices was damaged by falling debris from the north tower and the US custom offices in the WTC 6 building were damaged by widespread fires as well as falling debris from the North Tower. Falling debris from the towers, combined with fires that the debris initiated in several surrounding buildings, and caused a lot of damage to ten other large structures in the surrounding area. The process of cleaning up and recovery at the World Trade Centre site took eight months.
An impact that came from the 9/11 attacks that affected not only America but the whole world was the up scale in airport security. Airport security before the 9/11 terrorist attacks was simple and quick. You showed your ID. Once at the airport, there was minimal restrictions on sharp objects being taken in on carry-on baggage, eg. Pen knives, scissors. Not all baggage was scanned. There was to be no guns carried by crew and only a small curtain separated the pilots from the passengers in the coaches and toilets were located close to the cockpits. As a result of these attacks now at every security check you are required to show your passport. You are required to undergo an x-ray and metal detector and can be detained and required to undergo a thorough search. Before going through security belts must be taken off. Pilots are a lot to carry a gun with them on board. All luggage including handbags and carry-on bags are scanned and checked for bombs or anything harmful and airport staff are able to search any bag they think could be carrying anything dangerous. Liquids in carry-on bags have heavy restrictions. On many planes there is an officer disguised as a normal passenger.
Although this was such a devastating event that had tremendous impacts on everyone , it had one positive outcome; it brought America together as a nation. It brought out the best in many people. Communities came together to support each other in a testing time. People turned to friends and family for support and care. Donations to disaster charities went through the roof people were helping in every way they could. The New York Blood Centre received an estimated 36,000 units of blood from donors. $1.4 billion was donated to 9/11 charities. There was a huge influx in Americans both male and female enlisting to fight and help their country in battle.
Millions of people all over the world took part in 9/11 memorial services in the days after the attacks. Their have been numerous memorial services set up in memorial for the attacks for example the The National September 11 Memorial & Museum at the World Trade Centre Foundation, the 9/11 Tribute Centre, Flight 93 National Memorial, Shanksville, Pennsylvania, The pentagon Memorial. There are annual memorials held at these that are open to the public.
These deliberate attacks on America left the country and the world shocked, it has long lasting effects to this day on people all over the world and will continue to for a long time. These attacks brought America together as a country in such a horrific and testing time.
